Moon Dancer Winery
Growing Grapes on the Banks of the Susquehanna
Moon Dancer wine maker Jim Miller found
the perfect hybrid when he planted his vineyard
in 1998. Winemaking, for Jim, is the harmonious
blending of his two interests: a love of the outdoors
and business finance.
“You need a little of both to be in the wine business,”
he says. Moon Dancer, a French country-inspired
winery on 32 acres overlooking the Susquehanna
River in York County, grows European-style
grapes and produces at least 15 varieties of wine.
“Early on, we realized that this location, this climate
has the potential to grow world-class wines,”
Jim says. “We’re within a mile of the river and that
gives us deep, fertile soils and a longer growing
season that protects us from late-spring frosts.”
Jim runs the winery with wife Sue and their children,
Chase and Logan.
The winery’s name was inspired by its location.
“When the moon comes up in the evening, moonlight
dances on the river,” Jim says. “This area along
the river also contains a significant Native American
site. American Indians believed the mythic Moon
Dancer told them when to plant and harvest their
crops based on the phases of the moon.”
The Miller family hopes to build on the history that
has preceded them. “We built this winery from
scratch and we want to leave a legacy here that
endures,” says Jim.
