Spoutwood Farm
A Community Connected by a Love of the Land
Rob and Lucy Wood worked in Baltimore in the
late 1970s, where they tended a small, organic garden
in a tiny plot behind their townhouse. But they felt a
calling to another life.
“We cared so much about nature. We knew something
was pulling us. We had to put our caring into
practice,” Rob says.
In 1983, the couple bought 26 acres of
rolling farmland, old meadows and
verdant pastures in Glen Rock, York
County, just north of the Mason-Dixon Line. At first, they grew
herbs and dried flowers, offered
workshops and wrote a book on
floral arrangements. In 1996, they
established a Community Supported
Agriculture venture, or CSA, on 2.5
acres of the farm. CSAs allow the public
to pre-purchase an annual share in the farmer’s harvest.
The farmer, assured of a sale, then concentrates
on implementing proven, earth-friendly agrarian techniques
that yield nutritious, healthy produce.
“For 22 weeks, we harvest the fields and then divide it
among the shareholders as far away as Baltimore and
York,” Rob says.
“It's like buying stock in a company and once a week
you get a dividend,” Lucy says.
“Practically everything you can find in a supermarket,
you can find here,“ says Bob Bailey, who co-farms the
CSA with Rob. “Plus, we grow a lot of varieties you
can’t find in a grocery store.”
